Its place is taken either by the (1)&nbsp;<strong>present<\/strong>&nbsp;or (2)&nbsp;<strong>future<\/strong>&nbsp;tense, or by (3) an&nbsp;<strong>infinitive&nbsp;<\/strong>construction. In the following examples the underlined words are those which in English substitute for the subjunctive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>1. I don't believe that he&nbsp;<strong>studies<\/strong>&nbsp;so hard.<\/em><\/td>\n<td><em>1.&nbsp;We are glad that she&nbsp;<strong>is<\/strong>n't sick.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><em>2. He hopes that she&nbsp;<strong>will come<\/strong>.<\/em><\/td>\n<td><em>2. I doubt that they&nbsp;<strong>will prepare<\/strong>&nbsp;it.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><em>3. I want you&nbsp;<strong>to go<\/strong>.<\/em><\/td>\n<td><em>3. He tells the students&nbsp;<strong>to study<\/strong>.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, there are rare cases in which we still use the present subjunctive in English. In some instances we recognize its presence by the use of the word <strong>may<\/strong> with the verb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>I prefer that he&nbsp;<strong>do&nbsp;<\/strong>it now.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><em>He asks that we&nbsp;<strong>give<\/strong>&nbsp;him the money.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><em>I'm afraid that they&nbsp;<strong>may<\/strong>&nbsp;not&nbsp;<strong>be able&nbsp;<\/strong>to come.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In Portuguese the subjunctive is used very frequently in subordinate noun clauses. The noun clause is always introduced by the word&nbsp;<strong>que<\/strong>. The subjunctive is used in this clause when the verb in the independent clause is one of:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>1. Commanding or insisting. Common verbs that express this include: dizer, exigir, fazer, insistir, mandar<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>O chefe faz&nbsp;<strong>que leiamos<\/strong>&nbsp;o regulamento.<\/td>\n<td><em>[The boss makes us read the rules.]<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Exijo&nbsp;<strong>que&nbsp;<\/strong>voc\u00eas&nbsp;<strong>imprimam<\/strong>&nbsp;a carta de novo.<\/td>\n<td><em>[I insist that you print the letter again.]<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Mandam&nbsp;<strong>que cheguemos<\/strong>&nbsp;cedo.<\/td>\n<td><em>[They order us to arrive early.]<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Diz-lhes&nbsp;<strong>que<\/strong>&nbsp;n\u00e3o&nbsp;<strong>falem<\/strong>&nbsp;tanto.<\/td>\n<td><em>[He tells them not to talk so much.]<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>2.
